I designed this bucket hat pattern after spending one too many summers searching for a beginner-friendly hat I could make in matching sizes for my whole family. The patterns I kept finding were either fussy with shaping techniques new crocheters don’t know yet, or they came in just one size with no guidance on how to scale up or down. So I made the version I wished existed: four sizes in one pattern, only two stitches you already know, and a video tutorial walking through every round.

The textured stitch does most of the visual work — you’re just alternating two basic stitches in continuous rounds, no seams to sew, no joining rounds to count. Here’s everything you’ll need.

🧶 What you’ll need
- 100% cotton worsted weight yarn (#4 weight) — 2 balls, held double throughout
- 6 mm (J/10) crochet hook for the main hat
- 5 mm (H/8) crochet hook for the I-cord ties (baby and toddler sizes only)
- One stitch marker
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends

A note on the yarn choice: I always recommend cotton for sun hats. It’s breathable, machine washable, and holds its shape after wear and washing — synthetic yarns tend to get floppy and stretch out, which is the last thing you want from a hat that’s protecting a baby’s face from sun.

- MR — magic ring
- ch — chain

- inc — increase (2 stitches in same stitch)

- sl st — slip stitch
Round 1 (all sizes): Make a magic ring. Ch 1, work 8 sc into the ring. Pull tight to close. Place stitch marker in the first stitch to keep track of round beginnings. Do not join — you’ll be working in continuous spiral rounds throughout the entire hat.
